Kummooyeh Drawing (Bahlkum 발검) and Sheathing (Chackum 착검)–especially a live blade (Jinkum 진검)–requires clear-cut (pun intended), coordinated smooth movements between both hands, one with the sword and one with the scabbard. The blade, be it a real sword or a training sword, is always drawn and sheathed with the curved cutting edge facing away from user's body to avoid any accidents.
Let's do a mechanical walk thought of the Bahlkum and Chackum techniques.
The Drawing Process (Bahlkum 발검)
- Preparation: Grip the Kumjip (scabbard) with the left hand from underneath. With the right hand placed on the sword Kujaroo (grip/handle).
- The Draw: With the left thumb push up on the Kummaghi (hand guard) to unlock the sword from the scabbard. Simultaneously push the scabbard down with the left hand, from under the handle, while pulling the sword out with the right hand to clear the blade.
- Technique: This fluid, combative movement is Balkum, sword draw.
The Sheathing Process (Chackum 착검)
- Alignment: Grip the sword handle and the scabbard as you did when drawing, keeping the Kumnahl (blade edge) facing upward.
- Slide: Bring the Kumcoh (tip of the sword) to the mouth of the scabbard.
- Follow: Gently slide the Kumdung (back of the blade) along the inside curve of the scabbard until it is fully seated and the thumb locks the hand guard.
I've created several Kummooyeh sword drawing and sheathing videos over the years and are conveniently organized in it's own playlist on the Rockhold Karate YouTube Channel.
