Stressed? Catch your breath

My first Tang Soo Do instructor introduced me to many aspects of this wonderful martial art. Take a breather, and welcome to Moo Pahl Dam Khum, a set of eight deep breathing exercises. These were added to the Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan curriculum by its late founder, Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee.

Let's break it down: Moo (Military), Pahl (Eight), Dan (Level), Khum (Of Value). The Moo Pahl Dan Khum is a very old set of deep breathing exercises developed to maintain health, both internally and externally. Now, if you are a Kung Fu or Tai Chi player, you might be thinking this sounds familiar; your suspicions are valid. The Moo Pahl Dan Khum is a variation of the Eight Brocade Qigong Breathing Exercises. Wait, what!?! Yes, Tang Soo Do (China Hand Way) is heavily influenced by Chinese martial arts, as well as Japanese and Okinawan styles. Shock and surprise...not. Anyway, but what are the benefits of breathing... exercises? Catch your breath, I'm getting there.

Key Health Benefits
Enhanced Energy and Vitality: Regular practices are designed to eliminate fatigue and boost internal energy (qi).
Improved Flexibility and Strength: A routine strengthens legs and spine, offering a full-body stretch that improves joint mobility and posture.
Reduced Stress and Anxiety: This combination of slow and steady breathing, slow intentional movement, relaxes the nervous system and fosters mental clarity.
Improved Circulation and Immune Health: These exercises can help stimulate blood circulation and lymphatic flow, which aids in detoxifying the body.
Organ Health: Being mindful of the movements, one can target specific organ systems
Musculoskeletal Relief: These exercises are also effective for chronic pain, including neck pain, back pain, and arthritis, by improving mobility.

That's great, but what about the exercises? Just so happens, I have a playlist on the Rockhold Karate YouTube Channel. Don't forget to breathe.
